Driving to Joshua Tree from San Diego: routes, cars and charging

Joshua Tree National Park is about three hours from San Diego, and it is one of the trips our renters ask about most between October and May. The drive itself is half the fun: you climb out of the coastal sage, cross mountains and drop into a desert that looks nothing like the beach you left that morning.

This guide compares the two main routes, suggests the right car and covers the practical details that catch first-time desert visitors out.

Route 1: Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley

The fastest route follows Interstate 15 north to Temecula, then Highway 79 and the 10 east through Beaumont to Palm Springs. From there, Highway 62 climbs to the town of Joshua Tree and the park's West Entrance. Allow about 3 hours without stops.

This route is ideal if you want to break the trip in Palm Springs for a night. Ride the Aerial Tramway up Mount San Jacinto, walk the mid-century neighborhoods and grab a date shake at Shields in Indio the next morning before entering the park from the south.

Route 2: Through Anza-Borrego

For a more scenic drive, take the 78 east through Ramona and Julian, drop down to Borrego Springs, then head north on the S22 and Highway 86 to Indio. It adds around an hour but passes some of the best desert scenery in Southern California. Stop at Fonts Point for the badlands view if you have a high-clearance vehicle.

Choosing a car

Any car in our fleet can make the trip on paved roads. Our favorites are the Tesla Model 3, which handles the long freeway stretches quietly and cheaply, and the Jeep Wrangler if you plan to explore dirt roads such as Geology Tour Road inside the park, where high clearance is recommended.

Families usually choose the RAV4 for luggage space and air conditioning that keeps up with afternoon heat. Convertibles are fun in winter and spring but less pleasant when temperatures pass 95 degrees.

Fill up in Twentynine Palms or Indio. There is no fuel or EV charging anywhere inside Joshua Tree National Park.

Charging an electric car

Tesla Superchargers are in Temecula, Palm Desert, Indio and Twentynine Palms. A Model 3 leaving San Diego with a full charge reaches Palm Desert comfortably, and a 20-minute session there is enough to explore the park and return to a charger. Park practicalities

• Entry is paid per vehicle and valid for seven days
• Cell service is poor in most of the park, so download offline maps
• Carry at least one gallon of water per person per day
• Summer highs exceed 100 degrees; plan hikes before 10 am

Round trip or one-way?

Most guests return to San Diego, but if you are continuing to Las Vegas or Phoenix, a one-way rental avoids backtracking. Drop fees are shown when you book. Otherwise, returning to any of our six San Diego County branches is free.
