Do you need rental car protection in California? A plain-English guide

The most common question our guest care team answers is some version of this: do I actually need the protection you offer? The honest answer is that it depends on the coverage you already have. This guide explains what each option does, how it fits with personal insurance and credit cards, and how to decide in a few minutes before your trip rather than at the counter.

Nothing here is legal or insurance advice, and every policy is different, so always confirm details with your own insurer or card issuer.

What is included in every rental

California requires every rental to carry state minimum third-party liability. That covers injury to other people and damage to their property up to the state minimum limits. It does not cover damage to the rental car itself, and the limits are low compared with most personal policies.

Collision damage waiver, explained

A collision damage waiver, often called a CDW or LDW, is not insurance. It is an optional agreement where the rental company waives its right to charge you for damage to or theft of the rental car. Under California Civil Code, a damage waiver must be clearly optional and its price disclosed, and rental companies cannot require you to buy it.

At Coastline we offer three levels. Essential waives damage beyond a $1,000 deductible. Plus lowers that to $500 and adds supplemental liability and glass and tire coverage. Complete brings the deductible to zero and adds Roadside Plus and personal effects protection.

  • Essential: sample $17 per day, $1,000 deductible
  • Plus: sample $29 per day, $500 deductible, liability to $1M, glass and tires
  • Complete: sample $39 per day, $0 deductible, everything in Plus with Roadside Plus and personal effects

Does your personal auto policy cover rentals?

Many US personal auto policies extend collision and liability coverage to rental cars driven for personal use within the United States. The coverage usually matches your own car, including your deductible. If you only carry liability on an older car, you likely have no collision coverage for the rental.

Call your insurer and ask three questions. Does my policy cover rental cars in California? Does it include collision and comprehensive, and what is my deductible? Does it cover loss of use and administrative fees that a rental company may charge after an accident?

What about credit card coverage?

Many travel credit cards include rental car damage coverage when you pay with the card and decline the rental company's waiver. Some cards are secondary, meaning they only pay after your personal insurance. A few premium cards are primary. Card coverage almost never includes liability, and many exclude trucks, large vans and luxury vehicles.

Card benefits cover damage to the car, not injuries or damage to other people. Liability is the gap most travelers miss.

International visitors

If you live outside the United States, your home auto policy almost certainly does not apply here. We generally recommend international guests choose Plus or Complete so they have both a lower deductible and supplemental liability. Some international travel insurance includes rental car excess cover, which pairs well with Essential.

A quick way to decide

  • Full coverage personal US policy and a primary card: Own coverage is usually fine
  • US policy with a high deductible: Essential or Plus reduces what you could owe
  • No personal auto policy or visiting from abroad: Plus or Complete
  • Young driver, luxury car or long road trip: Complete gives the most peace of mind
